When Core Values Are Strategic: How the Basic Values of Procter & Gamble Transformed Leadership at Fortune 500 Companies

There seems to be a recent trend of books featuring retired or former executives of major companies sharing their experiences, successes and yes, even shortcomings.

This book is one of them and I find this one to have many positive features.

Without a doubt, Procter & Gamble has been a mainstay in successful companies and has positioned itself as a force in developing leadership both internally and other organizations, be they small or Fortune 500 Companies

The authors sought to identify through stories and illustrations how Proctor & Gamble achieved its long term successes. Rick Tocquigny and Andy Butcher measured quantitative research from a large P&G alumni from around the world and found many similarities in values and commitment, which one would I imagine is how they arrived at the book title.

Many of the interviews contain values that are motivating, at times inspiring and that offer non P&G professionals a sense of their own values as well. These interviews and stories from P&G leaders on their professional experiences reveal what they learned while part of the Proctor & Gamble team, as well as how it affected their lives after they left.

The book could at times seem almost monotonous and repetitive, as almost each of the 36 featured leaders share their almost identical values of teamwork, vision, integrity, leadership, and responsibility by accountability, yet it is these values that has made P&G and these individuals unique in a world that seems to be moving towards a selection of bland commodity choices.

The 36 stories are split among six segments, but none of them differ in importantance:

1. Sustaining Industry Leadership
2. Applying Core Values for Capability
3. Core Values and Teamwork
4. Core Values Drive Vision
5. Doing the Right Thing
6. Changing Lives

The authors allow the leaders the options to share their own message in their own way, yet each does tie back to the values theme. They include the need for ongoing and continuing professional development for people throughout an organization, as well as the need for leaders to “walk the walk” of leadership by example.

I cannot say that I had given P&G much thought as it was not in my industry of career choice, but this book is an excellent resource.

Highly recommended!

A Motivating Message of Sincerity and Inspiration,Winning Every Day
I had the opportunity to hear Lou Holtz as a keynote speaker a number of years ago,and I must say I was impressed by his message!   His message was not about sports or football, but about the challenges facing each of us in LIFE.
While I knew a bit of his coaching background, I did not know much about the man, his beliefs or his approaches. This book is an illustration of his messages that day – inspiring, down-to-earth, focused and caring. Unlike some other speakers who deliver their same speech regardless of where they are, Holtz personalized his message to the audience and that is what this book does.In 11 chapters, he outlines his style and love of coaching, but he focuses more on his attention to family, the athletes he sincerely cares about and the role of the university or    team environment. He is amusing, but sincere. His stories about attitude, perseverance, standards, pride, the lessons learned in both winning and losing are heartfelt and real.

I looked at other reviews and some of them were a bit critical about Notre Dame details or grammar, but this book is more than a coach talking about wins and championships.

It is relevant to hospitality because each of us clearly needs others – all successful hotels are teams.   This is a book about dealing with the challenges of reality in life as well as a sport and I find it excellent.

As always, comments are welcome

Reflections- People Who Made a Difference | Donald E. Lundberg

Reflections

We don’t always know what we want or what we expect and my first undergraduate class in my major was a real shocker for me.

Donald E. Lundberg was the department head of Hotel & Restaurant Administration when I first enrolled at the University of Massachusetts.   Few department heads at that time taught the Hotel 101 class (Introduction to Hospitality and Hotels), yet Dr. Lundberg seemed to cherish the 8am class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday that was perhaps not such very popular time slot for the 200+ freshmen and sophomores taking the class.

My recollections of the class were two-fold:

1)      it was a very good class In the sense that it provided an exceptional history of many individuals around the world that had been pioneers and

2)      I also learned that university grading was not the same as high school.  My 85 became a C, as he decided in his wisdom that a curve was to be used, meaning that at least 10% of the class would fail, no more than 5% would get an A and the balance was a formula never shared with students.

I got over the frustration of receiving a C in my first major class and learned a lesson on the need to better prepare on things that were important, because life is not always fair and there are many surprises to be experienced.  I learned there was a real need to do “a bit more”.

Dr. Lundberg left UMASS my senior year to begin a new program on the west coast and to continue his book authorship.  His books on restaurants, cooking, tourism and industry leadership remain available on many web sites today. The Restaurant: From Concept to Operation

I came to respect his knowledge and that his approaches were not as draconian as first imagined.  In fact, in my Junior year, I served as his undergraduate teaching assistant in that Hotel 101 class.   This experience led me to a career of interaction with higher education as an adjunct professor at three colleges over a 20 year period, as a corporate educator working with professionals and as an author and seminar leader.

The reflection here for me – remember those who influenced you and the reasons for that influence.    As I progress in my career, I try to impact others in the positive ways I feel provide value and growth for those I come in contact with.
