A very good introduction for those looking to find the value of “mindfulness.”​

 Get Some Headspace: How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life in Ten Minutes a Day

My son lived in Korea for five years and had communicated a number of Eastern beliefs and practices from his time there and I therefore had a fundamental awareness of the topic of mindfulness through meditation.

The title of this book intrigued me because like many Westerners, I felt a void in certain areas and felt “head space” could be a positive. The author, Andy Puddicombe, is a former Buddhist monk and is recognized as an important mindfulness meditation expert in the UK.

The introduction seems a bit drawn out, but it actually dispels some myths about meditation and introduces the reader to the reasons behind the concepts in the book. It addresses the values and principles of meditation, and the author’s personal experiences.

The book is in sections

1. ‘The Approach’

2. The Practice’

3. ‘The Integration’,

Each of these move the reader from background and general interest to preparing to meditate and then to incorporating the concept of mindfulness into your life.

Along the way are a series of short exercises one can do while reading, which is really a good introduction.

The book is manageable and easy to follow. Personal examples and stories are blended throughout the book and make the topics easier to follow as he is describing them.

He tries to balance the value of meditation between focus and relaxation, which makes the comments on mindfulness more understandable. The focus of “Get Some Headspace” is a greater awareness and understanding of ourselves and those we interact with. It focuses on finding our inner self, choosing how we see life and how we communicate and communicate with others

Puddicombe declares that meditating just ten minutes a day increases productivity, clarity and focus, reduces stress and anxiety, and helps with weight loss, improves sleep and personal relationships. He quotes research on increased blood flow and physical changes in the part of the brain that helps to control emotions and behavior and that mindfulness training can effectively treat certain addictions and eating disorders. There are claims of enhanced performance, in making sleep easier, and in a series of other improvements in cognitive skills and reducing the intensity of negative emotions, anxiety and harmful stress.

In reading books that claim to be life changing, it is always a challenge to write a meaningful and early review until one gets to judge the lasting benefits. The author’s website includes 10 free audio mediation sessions, which are supportive in trying to learn the how and why of the 10 minute habit.

I rate a 4 Star, and feel that “Get Some Headspace” is a very good introduction for beginners those looking to find the value of “mindfulness.”

A Great Resource for the Rising Professional and Mid-Level Manager of Today!
I hope readers of this review will not take my title to mean this is only for the rising professional- it can be a great refresher for any level of manager, but I find it to be a top notch resource for those who are on their way up.

A recap
* 227 pages , divided into two main sections:

1 – Managing Your Team and

2- Managing Yourself

* 106 “rules” dealing with hiring, motivating, disciplining, training, coaching and all that a manager should be doing regularly
* “Words of Wisdom” at the end of each of the two pages of “rules” that has a reflective quote or observation

I could expand my comments but I have discovered that brevity sometimes hits the mark better. This is a 5 Star Rating recommendation and its direct and to the point messages are well crafted and of real value.

I had the opportunity to hear Lou Holtz as a keynote speaker a number of years ago,and I must say I was impressed by his message!   His message was not about sports or football, but about the challenges facing each of us in LIFE.
While I knew a bit of his coaching background, I did not know much about the man, his beliefs or his approaches. This book is an illustration of his messages that day – inspiring, down-to-earth, focused and caring. Unlike some other speakers who deliver their same speech regardless of where they are, Holtz personalized his message to the audience and that is what this book does.In 11 chapters, he outlines his style and love of coaching, but he focuses more on his attention to family, the athletes he sincerely cares about and the role of the university or    team environment. He is amusing, but sincere. His stories about attitude, perseverance, standards, pride, the lessons learned in both winning and losing are heartfelt and real.

I looked at other reviews and some of them were a bit critical about Notre Dame details or grammar, but this book is more than a coach talking about wins and championships.

 

It is relevant to hospitality because each of us clearly needs others – all successful hotels are teams.   This is a book about dealing with the challenges of reality in life as well as a sport and I find it excellent.

People who made a difference in our lives and impacted our careers

There is one section of HoganHospitality.com that I have begun to  allow me the opportunity to “reflect” on some of those people who have positively impacted my career.  While these reflections will be of people that I have known, I encourage you to think back on the people who contributed to the person you are today.

This is a reflection on a high school teacher who influenced me in ways I could not anticipate at the time.

5. Brother Robert Michaud,

formerly of Prevost High School,  Fall River, Mass

We all are influenced by teachers at some point in our life.  Brother Robert was on the faculty of an all male Christian high school in southeastern Massachusetts when I attended.  My recollections was that this man, while always cordial, was not particularly outgoing and did not interact with many students outside of the classroom. An important fact for me is that I do know that I find his influence remains with me to this day.  As an English instructor, he insisted on sharing writing styles, challenging ideas, thought processing and exposure to many authors, poets and writers of many nationalities and generations.   I still recall the frustration of a high school junior rewriting an essay or term paper because this instructor insisted that I was capable of better and more.  While the frustrations were real,  the resulting better work was also real.

There were other faculty members who influenced and/or inspired me over the years, particularly at the university level, but this one professional who demanded clarity, focus and substance in writing left an indelible sense of appreciation to me in my work as an educator, author, speaker, and hotelier.

I hope and believe that I said “thank you” formally to Brother Robert after I left high school, and I do know that he was an informal mentor to many of my classmates in the areas of writing and communication.  The high school merged years ago with another following a devastating fire that was a total loss and Brother Robert has long since retired.  I will always appreciate his insistence on quality and his tenacity to drive each of us to just a bit more than we thought we were capable of.

Focus on fundamentals  

Earle Nightingale, in his award winning Lead the Field, identified four fundamentals that are universal for success in any business.  These included

1.      research and development

2.      sales

3.      operations and

4.      finance

Our industry needs to include successful understanding and focus of these fundamentals as markets and products continue to evolve.

A direct question – Do you know and practice the 4 Steps Needed to LEAD THE FIELD? ?

  • How many hotels, spas, clubs, restaurants and other hospitality businesses really pay attention to all of these four fundamentals?
  •  Do you pay attention to more than one of them?
  • More than two regularly?
  • When was the last time you actually conducted research on your customers’ preferences?
  • When did you last evaluate the financial practices of your hospitality business?

How many academic programs or universities address these?  I fear that not enough do, although I am aware of a handful that work hard to blend them into their curriculum.

Focusing on the fundamentals  may not be as flashy as the latest online or social media promotion, but the fundamentals are hard to argue with.

Peter Drucker introduced the term management by objectives more than 50 years ago.

  1. With his approach to strategic planning, options were identified, considered, discussed and executed.

Amplified Support of Hospitality Associations: #2 of 13 Important Changes We Need and Want in 2012 – from HospitalityEducators.com

This is a continuing series from a non-traditional commissioned year-end column that was not a prediction of trends nor a list of New Year’s resolutions.  I felt honored to have been asked by the editor of one of the world’s best known online publications to consider and share my thoughts on what we want to see more in the  new year.

The list includes what we want and need in 2012, which is reflected in the title that asks
“if hospitality is still an industry that motivates entrepreneurs.”

#2:  Amplified Support of Hospitality Associations

A generation ago, many hospitality associations served as primarily professional centers of information and socializing.

Today they have become centers of activity and provide other needed services for Hotels, Restaurants,  clubs, spas and other hospitality businesses.

Some of those services include

  1. education – the need for ongoing continuing education has never been more evident.  Associations at the local, provincial/state and national levels augment that offered by brands and fill a major role for those that take advantage of it
  2. political lobbying – hospitality and tourism is a major employer and tax collection center in many areas of the world, yet it has often not been at the center of attention in sharing views on how the industry is addressed.  In the past 15 years or so, national associations have begun to assertively state the goals and opinions of the components of the hospitality industry, but there is much more that should be done NOW.
  3. networking  – social media is growing in its reach to people globally, but the hospitality industry remains a high touch industry.  Personal contacts, face to face meetings and collaboration on important issues cannot be replaced by technology alone and associations fill that role
  4.  consumer marketing  – Technology does play a major role in certain marketing efforts and local and regional associations provide exceptional support in promoting consumer awareness and the uniqueness of what is offered.

Individuals, companies, brands and other regional organizations should consider more active support of Hospitality Associations – because we are all in this together!

 The Changing Landscape in Global Hospitality Education and Training

The economic forecasts remain mixed, but the overall message shared in many publications, news stories and online services implies a more optimistic outlook in hospitality and the hotel industry in the foreseeable future. This positive upswing will mean the need for both additional staff and increased training in evolving markets.

In this series of “HOW TO” columns titled HOSPITALITY CONVERSATIONS, I chose a topic that is of universal interest to all hotel managers, human resource professionals and associates themselves :

How To Provide Training and Professional Development that positively hits the target of engaging staff in meaningful programs while providing measurable results.

For this topic, I contacted a well-known professional in the industry, Dr. Marc Clark, CHA CHO CHE of Kentucky. Clark is a hospitality veteran of more than three decades, with a strong reputation as a corporate educator. In his career, he has conducted over 3,400 domestic and international seminars in such locations as Mexico, Canada, Panama, Thailand, Taiwan, India, Switzerland, Spain, Africa, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

We are all aware of the dramatic changes in both our customers and staff, as the global shift in travel and employment opportunities continues to evolve. With that in mind, I asked the following questions about adult learners:

QUESTION 1: What different teaching styles and practices might you use today when you are lecturing in India compared with Switzerland ?

  •  My teaching/educating style and practices today are similar, whether I am presenting to a group of hospitality students in Anand-Gujarat, India or an assembly of university faculty members in Leysin, Switzerland. Success with these groups evolves from the adult learning conditions that are set into practice to aid in the learning process.
  •  I support open discussion.
  •  I believe that participants in any educational gathering should be allowed to intellectually challenge, discuss and question ideas, methods, and issues that have been brought forward. Such dialogue takes learning beyond the basic level of retention of information and brings participants into higher levels of thought. It is statistically proven that the greater an individual’s involvement is during the learning process, the better their understanding, retention and transfer of information occurs.
  • Understanding how people learn is also critical to the learning process.

People learn in different ways. There are visual learners who learn by seeing, auditory learners who learn by hearing and tactile-kinesthetic learners who learn by doing.

Taking time to research facts about a group that I will be spending time with aids me in selecting the proper method or methods and support media that will be used in presenting content.

I do believe that the learning experience should be up-beat, informative, engaging, relevant and connected to real issues. There must be practical issues in which the learning can be applied.

Teaching and learning is a two way street, that when traveled should be fun no matter what direction you are moving.

QUESTION 2: You have been the team leader for training programs at such diverse organizations as Ponderosa Steakhouses and Opryland Hotel. How are adult learners different from the students of 20 years ago?

  1.  First is the realization that the world has radically changed. Technology has seen to that, as has the social scene. Attitudinal differences between generations are somewhat startling. It is no longer possible to think workers have the same approach to living, working or learning as those who came before them.
  2. The adult learner today is becoming more tech-savvy simply because it has become a survival technique. Individuals are in some way, shape or form connected 24/7 via a mobile device or a PC. Social media tools such as wikis, blogs, and social networks provide immeasurable opportunities to connect and expand their horizons.
  3. I believe that today’s learners differ from the traditional learner of two decades ago in the following ways:

• They are inundated by massive amounts of information coming in from many sources.

• They parallel process and are skilled multi-taskers.

• Attention spans are shorter so learners prefer bite-size chunks of content to deal with and process.

• They seek relevant information that can be applied immediately (prefer to learn “just-in-the- nick-of-time)

• Collaborating, sharing and exchanging ideas with others are important. Creates a sense of community.

• Enjoy learning through fun (games, simulations, interactive activities).

• These form an environment of discovery.
