In my work as an educator and consultant, I work with both family businesses of various sizes and with traditional corporate structures.  Each of them have a common need – planning for the future by either growing their own talent or by identifying and addressing their weaknesses them by finding the right professionals to strengthen their businesses.

This means active succession planning, which sounds much easier than it actually is.

I am not fond of the series titled “for Dummies” but some of these books do a credible job at simplifying the approaches needed to address the topic. This is one of them.

The book is in 5 main sections
1. What Is a Succession Plan, and Why Do You Need One?
2. Creating a Plan and Putting It into Action
3. Diving Deeper into Succession Planning
4. Keeping the Succession Ball Rolling
5. The Part of Tens

Each of these parts begins with a disarming but pertinent cartoon by Rich Tennant, which add to the relaxed atmosphere of the book itself. Early into the first chapter, the author asks a key question, where we are asked to consider what might happen without a succession plan. He answers that in a very concise way:

Succession planning plays a role in extending a family business into the next generation by resolving issues of responsibility and authority needed to succeed. It can allow a business to pass from one group to another in a sale by ensuring the operational, marketing, and financial and people services are maintained.

Succession planning requires flexibility, timing and a commitment to process. This book provides tangible tools and resources, while acknowledging some of the more intangible but very real emotional characteristics of change

Dr. Arnie Dahlke, the author, has both academic, business and experience credentials to justify his messages and the book offers a guide, using clear and succinct techniques.

I liked the “Where to Go from Here” at the end of the introduction, which summarizes the need and background for planning.

Succession planning often requires more than reading a book due to the very involved details of transition, but this is an excellent resource

Flo Cunningham – unexpected lessons learned

 Flo was a contradiction of the times.

In the mid 1970s, the glass ceiling was very real in much of the hotel business.  At the flagship 1500 room Sheraton Boston hotel, there were no women department heads, sales managers or executives at the time I was a management trainee.  The few supervisory roles filled by women are often in housekeeping or the coffee shop .  This was not considered unusual at the time.

Flo was transferred into the hotel from world headquarters, also in Boston.  A take charge personality, she was strong willed and handled both public relations and special projects.  By watching her from afar, I learned of how interaction was addressed both from and within a corporate home office of a large company.   The support was sometimes appreciated, and sometimes appeared to be meddling.   Flo was focused on achieving results and fitting in with others as appropriate, and I even recall she joined other executives in smoking the occasional cigar.

I was reassigned from Boston to Houston in 1976, and I had  no further interaction with Flo.  I do recall visiting the Sheraton Boston in the last five years and women executives and managers have taken their rightful place in positions of responsibility.

Flo’s example and persistence gave me insights as a trainee not to make first judgments on others too quickly and this lesson has remained with me my entire career.

Reflections….

People who made a difference in our lives and impacted our careers

There is one section of HoganHospitality.com that I have begun to  allow me the opportunity to “reflect” on some of those people who have positively impacted my career.  While these reflections will be of people that I have known, I encourage you to think back on the people who contributed to the person you are today.

This is a reflection on a high school teacher who influenced me in ways I could not anticipate at the time.

5. Brother Robert Michaud,

formerly of Prevost High School,  Fall River, Mass

We all are influenced by teachers at some point in our life.  Brother Robert was on the faculty of an all male Christian high school in southeastern Massachusetts when I attended.  My recollections was that this man, while always cordial, was not particularly outgoing and did not interact with many students outside of the classroom. An important fact for me is that I do know that I find his influence remains with me to this day.  As an English instructor, he insisted on sharing writing styles, challenging ideas, thought processing and exposure to many authors, poets and writers of many nationalities and generations.   I still recall the frustration of a high school junior rewriting an essay or term paper because this instructor insisted that I was capable of better and more.  While the frustrations were real,  the resulting better work was also real.

There were other faculty members who influenced and/or inspired me over the years, particularly at the university level, but this one professional who demanded clarity, focus and substance in writing left an indelible sense of appreciation to me in my work as an educator, author, speaker, and hotelier.

I hope and believe that I said “thank you” formally to Brother Robert after I left high school, and I do know that he was an informal mentor to many of my classmates in the areas of writing and communication.  The high school merged years ago with another following a devastating fire that was a total loss and Brother Robert has long since retired.  I will always appreciate his insistence on quality and his tenacity to drive each of us to just a bit more than we thought we were capable of.

We see on television and movies every day the “perfect” delivery of lines and the reading of the news from teleprompters to the point where the tendency is at times forget that many of the deliveries we see were actually third or seventh “takes” . We have also seen on many You Tube videos local or national anchors who have not quite delivered their best.

As an educator, trainer and consultant, I have worked with many people on both improving presentation skills and on fine tuning sales proposal delivery. From my observations and research, the following are offered as things to be aware of. These are distractions from your message and dilute your effectiveness:

  1. Playing with, tugging or pulling your hair

  2. Constantly adjusting your glasses

  3. Clicking pens or tapping pencils on the desk, podium or table

  4. Drumming your fingers

  5. Constantly checking your cell phone (which should have been turned off)

  6. Biting your fingernails

  7. Playing with clips, bands or other materials on paper

  8. Smacking or licking your lips

  9. Interrupting other people who may have the floor (in presentations, it could be Q&A; in sales calls, it could be a client inquiry)

  10. Not making consistent eye contact with your audience (of one or a group in a presentation)
